DiarrheaDiarrhea: No One is Immune It’s hard to believe that there is anyone that hasn’t had an experience with diarrhea. Diarrhea is more common then one might imagine. Diarrhea, that detestable, unpleasant digestive disorder, will be a part of a majority of Americans lives some where between 3 and 4 times ever year The loose stools that are characteristic of diarrhea usually only last a few days. We have all heard the funny slang names for the uncomfortable disorder, and maybe even chuckled at someone we knew was suffering. It is easy to do, until it strikes home. Then it’s no laughing matter. Those extra trips the restroom, the high volume stool output, the cramps, the dehydration, it’s not funny at all then. Diarrhea that last only a few days is referred to as “Acute”. A few causes of diarrhea are such things as infections, medications-especially antibiotics, stress, and often artificial sweeteners as well. Infections such as the flue virus among many others can cause the loose stools associated with diarrhea. Bacterial infections can also be a cause. Bacterial infections commonly come from lack of cleanliness, either by the things we touch in day to day social activity, sometimes in food preparation, or they can even be air borne in so they are taken into our system simply by breathing. Though not as common as it once was in less then modern times, water contamination can also be a source of bacteria that can cause diarrhea. Parasites can also cause diarrhea. One such parasite, called Giardiasis is the most frequent cause of non-bacterial diarrhea in North America Diarrhea that lasts only a few days is referred to as “Acute”, if it lasts longer then two weeks it is considered to be “Chronic Diarrhea”. If diarrheas becomes chronic, it may be signs of a more serious disorder such as inflammatory bowel disease, or it may possibly be associated with another chronic, but less serious disorder known as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. In any case, chronic or re-occurring diarrhea needs to be paid special attention, to ensure proper nutrition absorption. Due to the speed at which nutritional intake and fluids pass through the system during bouts of diarrhea, it is important to be aware of the signs of dehydration and lost of electrolytes. Most cases of diarrhea will excuse the pun; pass on their own without medical intervention. But when diarrhea persists for longer then 5 to 7 days or if there is passing of blood in the stool see your health care professional.
