Causes Of Diarrhea
Normally, the food we eat remains in a liquefied form during most of the digestion process. When the unused or unabsorbed food passes through the colon, most of the fluids are absorbed and what remains is or should be a solid form yet soft stool. In the case of diarrhea, the food and fluids that are ingested pass too quickly or in too large an amount through the colon. The fluids aren't inadequately absorbed through the colon, and the result is a watery bowel movement. Also if the lining of the colon is inflamed or diseased, such as with inflammatory bowel disease or possibly Irritable Bowel Syndrome, then the body may be able to less effectively control the mount of fluid expelled with the stool.
Lactose Lactose, a sugar found in milk and milk products, is a common cause of diarrhea in some people. People who are susceptible are referred to as lactose intolerant . Bacteria and Parasites Contaminated water or food can transmit bacteria and parasites to the body. Parasites such as Giardia lamblia and cryptosporidium can cause diarrhea. Common bacterial causes of diarrhea include campylobacter, salmonella, shigella and Escherichia coli. This type of diarrhea can be common when traveling into undeveloped countries or jungle regions of the world
Virus The More common viruses that cause diarrhea are the Norwalk virus, cytomegalovirus or CMV is found worldwide. The virus is carried by people and is not associated with food, water, or animals. Viral hepatitis and the herpes simplex virus are also common causes of diarrhea. Rotavirus is the most common cause of acute childhood diarrhea. Viral diarrhea spreads with ease among persons in close proximity to those infected.
Artificial Sweeteners Artificial sweeteners such as Sorbitol and mannitol, found in chewing gum and other sugar-free products, can cause diarrhea in some otherwise healthy people. Because of their wide spread use in products today, it may be difficult to determine artificial sweeteners as the root cause of diarrhea. It may take time for the affects to surface over prolonged use.
Medications Many medications can cause diarrhea in some people. Diarrhea may or may not be listed as a side effect of the particular medication. Antibiotics are known to be agents that cause diarrhea. Antibiotics destroy both good and bad bacteria, which can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. This disruption can sometimes leads to a bacterial infection called Clostridium difficile, which is known to cause diarrhea.
Other digestive disorders. Chronic diarrhea has a number of causes unrelated to the above listed causations, such as Crohn's Disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome These diseases and disorders are know to cause diarrhea, yet the exact mechanism is not fully understood. Treating the digestive disorder or disease may entail treating the symptoms of diarrhea as a part of the over all treatment of the disease or disorder.
